Playboy Pulls Plug on Portugal Edition Over Nudes, Jesus (photos)

Playboy magazine
in deeply Catholic Portugal has caused an uproar by publishing photos
of Jesus with nude models, prompting the home office
in Chicago to effectively kill the book. So much
for Playboy founder Hugh
Hefner’s progressive
attitude.
Catholic
Latin countries with Playboy editions seem to have an obsession with
religion and Playboy’s hedonism. The Mexican edition cause a
similar uproar with it published a religious themed issue.
But
this time Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Enterprises has decided to take a
stand on its wallet. “It is a shocking breach of our standards and
we would have not allowed it to be published if we had seen it in
advance,” Playboy spokeswoman Theresa
Hennessy told
London’s Daily
Mail.
The
issue, however, is designed to do more than provoke outrage. It was a
tribute to the late Nobel laureate José
Saramago who
authored “The Gospel According to Jesus Christ.” Saramago, who
died last month, portrays Jesus as a flawed, human character in his
book, much as Dan
Brown did
in his controversal book “The Da Vinci Code.” source:
Playboy magazine is to pull the plug on its Portuguese edition after it ran a photo shoot featuring Jesus Christ among topless models.
The spread was ostensibly a tribute to Nobel Prize-winning author Jose Saramago’s The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, but Hugh Hefner’s headquarters have reacted with outrage.
The pictures show a long-haired, glowing Jesus watching two models in a lesbian clinch, standing next to a prostitute and looking over the shoulder of a woman reading a book.
